I read a very good article in Time Magazine that focused on weight loss. In the article Kevin Hall studied 14 contestants from "The Biggest Loser." He found that during a regular season of the show the contestants lost on average of 127 pounds and each about 64% of their body fat. He also found that over time 13 of the 14 contestants that were studied gained back 66% of the weight they'd lost on the show, and four of them ended up being heavier than they were before the competition.
Now if that doesn't make you want to give up I don't know what would!
When you think about it those reality shows are really not set up for long-term success, but really a quick slim down. They make anyone watching think they can do it just as fast. And I know that I've said it before but I believe that most Americans want a quick fix and want to have everything right now. Another thing those shows have that we don't is personal trainers, dietitians, chefs and doctors all dedicated to them. I don't know about you but I definitely can't afford all of that.
He also states in his article that the diet that works for you is most likely not the best diet for your next-door neighbor. They quoted a 26 year old who lost 278 pounds in 16 months she said "my advice is to focus on each day, not how far you have to go. Weight loss is a journey not a sprint."
Another researcher Rena Wing stated "There is nothing magical about what they do. Some people emphasize exercise more than others, some follow low-carb diets, and some follow low-fat diets. The one commonality is that they had to make changes in their everyday behaviors."
I really enjoyed that in this article it was focused on people individually. And how it brings up the fact that not all "diets" are right for everyone and that you won't necessiarilly have the same results as someone else. I agree with that and find that fact very true, we all have different metabolisims and our bodies all carry weight differently.
I am so grateful I made the decision to eat healthier and live a healthier life. I am so much more confident and I'm a lot happier than I was before!!
